Health & Vaccinations

Below you can find an overview of topics related to medical care that are relevant before your arrival.

Medical care in Austria

The medical system in Austria is well developed. Various private and public providers offer suitable coverage, depending on the reason and duration of your stay.

Before your arrival, we recommend considering your personal medical situation and taking the necessary precautions for your stay in Austria, such as:

  • if you have to regularly take prescription medication, ensure you bring a sufficient quantity for your stay (in case of short-term stays) and/or the prescription from a doctor. Please consult the Austrian embassy to find out about the import conditions of prescription medication.

  • Psychological councelling for students: it may be required to schedule an appointment well in advance (approx. 3 months) http://www.studierendenberatung.at/

  • Vaccination record: we recommend bringing your vaccination record to Austria.

Will you need health insurance in Austria?

Whether you have to take out health insurance in Austria depends on the duration of your stay and on your nationality.

Non-EU/EEA nationals (students) must have a suitable insurance for the visa and residence permit.

EU/EEA nationals (students) may be covered in Austria with their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). Read more about this topic here. It is also possible to take out Austrian health insurance after the arrival.

Vaccinations

If you are spending the summer semester in Graz or stay in Austria for a longer time, we recommend a “tick vaccination” to protect you against diseases such as meningitis and tick-borne encephalitis (TBE).

For effective protection you need two vaccinations. You can get vaccinated in Graz in the summer semester.

Drinking water

Tap water in Austria is of high quality and drinkable.
