Residence permit or visa?
Only non-EU/EEA nationals need a visa or residence permit to stay in Austria.
A visa is necessary for stays of up to 6 months. It can only be issued abroad by the Austrian representation in charge.
A residence permit is only relevant for stays longer than 6 months. You will receive a card that is valid for up to 12-24 months. It can be extended, if necessary.
Before you can collect your permit
You should have applied for the residence permit abroad, but the card is issued by the immigration offices in Austria. To get your residence permit card, you must first complete steps 1-3 as mentioned below:

The email must have the following format:
Subject: Terminanfrage Erstantrag Aufenthalt
Text:
- Your arrival date in the Schengen area
- Your last name(s) according to passport
- Your first name(s) according to passport
- Your date of birth
- Your nationality / nationalities
- The name of the residence title you wish to apply for = “Aufenthaltsbewilligung-Student”
Please also attach your passport (and visa, if applicable) as scan to this email.
